Getting Ready for the CQC’s Single Assessment Framework

The CQC’s Single Assessment Framework changed how services are assessed, moving away from a fixed inspection cycle towards a more continuous, evidence based approach built around quality statements and ongoing monitoring. For providers still adjusting their internal processes, achieving genuine assessment framework readiness means rethinking how compliance evidence is gathered and maintained, not just updating a few documents to reflect new terminology.

What continuous assessment actually requires

Under the previous inspection model, many services could reasonably prepare intensively in the weeks before a scheduled visit. The Single Assessment Framework removes that predictability, since CQC can draw on evidence at any time, including information submitted by providers themselves, feedback from people who use services, and data from partner organisations. This means providers need to prepare for new CQC framework requirements by maintaining evidence continuously, rather than treating compliance as a periodic exercise timed around an expected inspection date.

This matters practically because services that have not adjusted their internal processes may find themselves caught out, not because their care is poor, but because their evidence is not readily available when it is needed. Quality statements under the new framework require specific, current evidence, and providers need to be confident that this evidence exists and is accessible at any given moment, not just in the run up to a known inspection.

To build genuine Single Assessment Framework readiness, providers should:

  • Map existing evidence against the relevant quality statements for their service type.
  • Move away from periodic evidence gathering towards continuous evidence maintenance.
  • Ensure evidence can be retrieved quickly at any point, not just before a scheduled visit.
  • Keep staff informed about how the new framework changes what is expected of them day to day.
  • Review readiness regularly as CQC guidance under the framework continues to evolve.

Because the Single Assessment Framework relies on ongoing evidence rather than a single point-in-time inspection, it is also worth reviewing readiness more frequently than providers may have done under the previous system. A quarterly internal review of evidence against the relevant quality statements, rather than an annual one, helps catch gaps while there is still time to address them, rather than discovering a shortfall only when CQC actually requests information.

Providers should also make sure that staff at all levels understand the practical implications of the Single Assessment Framework, not just registered managers and compliance leads. Because CQC can gather evidence continuously, including feedback directly from people who use services and their families, frontline staff need to understand that their everyday conduct and record keeping form part of the ongoing evidence base, rather than something that only matters in the lead up to a known inspection date.

HLTH Manage’s Single Assessment Framework readiness support helps providers organise evidence around the framework’s quality statements, drawing on the training, policy and audit evidence already held within the platform. Because CQC Single Assessment Framework software of this kind maintains evidence continuously rather than as a periodic export, providers are better placed to respond confidently whenever CQC requests information, rather than needing advance notice to prepare. This reflects the genuine shift the framework represents, from point in time inspection towards ongoing assurance.
